Some history about international nurses' day and Florence Nightingale
The 12th of May marks the birthday of Florence Nightingale. In January 1974 the International Council of Nurses made a decision that the birthday of Florence Nightingale would mark the date for International Nurses Day (2). Now 42 years later around the world communities and the nurses which work within them come together to celebrate International Nurses Day on the 12th May.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) founded in 1899 is a federation of 130 countries, it serves to bring together nursing organizations under one banner, allowing for the advancement of the socio-economic status of nurses and the profession of nursing worldwide. Most notabley the ICN serves to influence global and domestic health policy and sets the theme each year for International Nurses' Day (IND) (3).
