A competition was run by Global Research Nurses' Network, between August and October 2013. The prize was to attend the RCN International Research Nursing Conference in Glasgow in April 2014. Nurses were asked to answer the question:

"With reference to a research study that you have worked on, describe how nurses contribute to clinical research and discuss what support is needed to enable greater involvement for nurses in clinical research."

The winner, Athira Rani, comes from Kerala. She flew to Glasgow and attended the three day conference, where she presented a concurrent event and participated in many sessions and events.

Other winners were Bertha Maseko from Malawi and Priyanka Tiwari from Nepal. They each won a one year online subscription to 2 Nursing Journals from Wiley & Co.

Here are Athira's comments about the event;

"I am so much fortunate to be the member of Global Health Research Nurses Network.Being  winner of the competition I benefited a lot.It is very interesting to see what is happening around us so that we can reflect and will be able to realize that where we are.I am talking about the RCN conference.I could meet many stalwarts of RCN and research nurses across the globe. The most important thing which I got from the conference is that I got many research ideas, discussion with few members leads some initial threads for collaborative research. And I was able to understand the research priorities of different countries and how they intervene a research question.
Most challenging was the concurrent sessions there were 9 at a time.We have to be choosy."

While she was in Glasgow, Athira gave an inteview to Kelly Gleason, for Clinfield. This is her interview

4 entries from Nigeria

Amah Okezie is now featured on our Features Participant page. He is a Nursing Officer, with experience in Resrach, and a commitment to improvingthe situation of nurses in Nigeria.

Of the other entries to the competition, 4 came from Nigeria. They were sent in by Amah Okezie, Olayinka Aremu, Uzoegew Rita Oluchukwu and Charity Maina.

Charity Maina gave a clear explanation of why clinical research is important in providing evidence for practice. She described in detail how nurses are involved at every stage of the research process. Charity showed that she understands how clinical research is conducted and what is required of nurses.

Charity suggested that nurses are held back from being part of the research team because they have a poor foundation in theory and therefore lack understanding of research. She thought that nurses could be more involved in research if they received a better grounding during initial nurse education, and identifies poor ratio of teachers:nurses as a factor in failure to prepare nurses for a research environment.

Charity did not refer to a specific research study, but the detail of her description and the relevance of her arguments  demonstrated understanding of what research is, how nurses can contribute to it and the difficulties that restrict the involvement of nurses in research.

Rita's article also gave a good discussion of the role of the research nurse.

COMPETITION WINNERS

We received 60 entries to the Global Research Nurses’ competition, they came from 17 countries. One entry was disallowed as the writer is currently working in the UK. Two entries were significantly over the word count.

All entries were read by members of the Global Health team, and a short list of 16 was selected for consideration for the prizes. The short listed entries were sent to a panel of 3 independent judges. They came from Jordan, UK and Kenya, but unfortunatley, the judge from Kenya had to withdraw before judging was done. The judges considered each entry against criteria based on the competition question. The criteria were that the article show

  1. An understanding of the research process
  2. A description of the role and responsibilities of the nurse in the research team
  3. Clear points about the importance of nursing skills for the research team
  4. Identification of and insight into challenges faced by research nurses
  5. A well-structured and thoughtful discussion presenting original ideas about how nurses can be more involved in clinical research

The judges identified entries that they thought were most deserving of a prize. There was a lively discussion via Skype, to discuss and agree the winning entries.

The winning articles were sent by
