ONE DAY WORKSHOP, Smt NAGARATHNAMMA COLLEGE of NURSING, BANGALORE; 26th NOVEMBER 2013

A workshop was attended by about 100 participants for a full programme of interactive sessions and talks. The day was arranged by the Principal, Dr Esther Shirley Daniel, in collaboration with Global Research Nurses network.

REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON “INNOVATIVE TEACHING AND EVALUATIVE MEASURES”
HELD IN COLLABORATION WITH GLOBAL RESEARCH NURSES NETWORK, THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD, UNITED KINGDOM.

 

The day commenced by registration at 8:30am and the delegates signed up for 3 priority workshops they were interested to attend in the morning session and two workshop they intended to attend in the afternoon session. This was followed by a pretest.


A formal inaugural ceremony evoking God’s blessings followed by lighting of the lamp by dignitaries on the Dias and student representatives. Mrs. Archana B, was the Master of Ceremonies. Welcome note was given by Prof. Dhanpal HN. The gathering was addressed by our International collaborator Nicola McHugh, Global Research Nurses Network, The University of Oxford, United Kingdom. This was followed by the address by the Chief Guest Dr. G. Kasturi, Consultant, Nursing Education, RGUHS, Bangalore. Presidential address was rendered Dr. Esther Shirley Daniel, Principal, Smt. Nagarathnamma College of Nursing. Vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. Devi Nanjappan.


After the inaugural ceremony the delegates moved to their respective sessions arranged in Labs and various lecture halls. The morning session was as follows…There were four different topics of which the delegates had chosen to attend any three only. Sessions ran from 10am to 1pm.

 

  1. Mind mapping was headed by Dr. Esther Shirley Daniel. Brief outline on mind mapping was given followed by hands on experience of creating their own beautiful, imaginative and creative mind maps using the clue word provided. Materials like charts, sketch pens, colour pens, post-it slips, rulers, pencils, erasers where some of the materials used in this session. There were around 37 delegates signed up for mind mapping sessions. Creative hands on experience were given to the delegates. Later the participants displayed their mind maps and explained the concept. This session brought out their creative thinking and helped in applying critical thinking techniques.
  2. PBL – Problem Based Learning was headed by Prof. Devi Nanjappan. A case scenario was given to the participants and various literature sources like books, journals, laptops with internet connections, website addresses were provided to aid the delegates to get hands on training in the use of this innovative method of teaching. There were 32 participants enrolled for the session.
  3. Simulation – was headed by Prof. Mariam Jaisy. An e-tour was done on various aspects of simulation followed by hands on experience on preparation of various mollashes. There were 31 participants for simulation. This session emphasized how as teachers simulation can be brought into teaching simple concepts like different types of stools, body fluids and vomitus. This session had the participants try out their creative skills and added creativity to their teaching. All the participants were of the opinion that they will take the learning from this session into their teaching sessions.
  4. OSCE- was headed by Prof. Anitha, Dept of Medical Surgical Nursing, JSS College of Nursing, Mysore. OSCE meaning Objectively Structured Clinical Evaluation is a hands on practical way of testing a student in clinical skills. Admission procedure was chosen for OSCE. There were seven stations from orientation to Discussion through history taking, physical examination, tray setting for oral care and eye care and skin care procedure, question and answering. Total numbers of participants were 43 who signed up and participated. This method of teaching is useful in imparting critical skills required by a student nurse to function effectively in the hospital.

These sessions of the morning events was followed by delicious Karnataka delicacy.

The afternoon session commenced by 2pm with a presentation by Nicola McHugh on Rating scales. She highlighted the use and application of rating scales in research.

  1. This was followed by two workshop sessions on standardized tools by Dr. Jeyaseelan M. Devadasan, Dean, Annai JKK Sampoorani Ammal College of Nursing, Erode, Tamil Nadu. He briefed the delegates on how to prepare their research tools and how could standardize them through reliability and validity measures. This had the PG students glued to their seats and clarified all their doubts. There were 36 participants enrolled for the session.
  2. Essay, short notes and MCQs workshop by Prof. Celine Alexander, HOD, OBG Dept gave hands on experience on test construction and clarified the doubts of participants. There were 30 participants enrolled for the session.
  3. Anecdotal records, critical incident reports by Prof. Lissy John, Nursing Superintendent, MS Ramaiah Hospital, Bangalore had the participants in apt attention. She gave examples of real incidents that occur commonly in a hospital setup and how to write the reports. A total of 23 participants enrolled for the session.

All good things have to end on a happy note. The valedictory ceremony was held at 5:10pm.


Prof. PVBRK Brahmam, Head – QUICAI, Acharya Institutes was the Chief Guest. Nicola McHugh was the Guest of Honor. Ms. Linda Rose was the Master of Ceremonies. Welcome was rendered by Assoc. Prof. Sakthi Bharati. Report of the workshop was presented by Ms. Nandhini, II year MSc Nursing Student. She highlighted the pretest and posttest results, which showed a 40% enhancement. Poster Competition winners were Baptist Hospital College of Nursing, Bangalore. Prizes and Certificates were distributes to winners and participants. Delegates response by 2 delegates highlighted the workshop and take home message. Nicola McHugh was felicitated by Principal Dr. Esther S. Daniel on behalf of the Management. Vote of thanks was given by Prof. Celine Alexander. The day’s events came to a close at 6:00pm with singing of our National Anthem.


This International Workshop wouldn’t have been possible but for the sincere efforts of our dear MSc Nursing students and faculty who went all out to see that every detail was looked into from planning, implementing and evaluating the day’s events.
