    Date: Tuesday, October 25th 2016

                     Blantyre, Malawi

A workshop coordinated by Global Health Trials Network and MLW Clinical Research Department

INTRODUCTION

The Malawi –Liverpool Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Department in collaboration with the Global Health Trials Network organized a one day workshop which drew eighty participants from ten institutions in Southern Malawi. It attracted a wide section of members involved in Clinical research, participants included: research nurses and clinicians, data officers, laboratory, pharmacy and field workers.

The workshop was organized to share skills which are vital in ensuring GCP compliance in clinical research conducted in Malawi.

OBJECTIVES

  • To improve quality of data collected by researchers.
  • To provide an insight into the importance of quality assurance and quality control in clinical research.
  • To emphasize the importance of documenting accurate data in all aspects of a clinical trial.

AGENDA

The workshop was opened by the Senior Research Administrator of MLW, Tamala Chipasula who welcomed everyone to the gathering. Participants were informed that adherence to GCP; results into research data that is accurate and credible which in turn will provide accurate research findings.

A brief reminder on the importance of safety in the work place was given by Dalitso Botoman, Health and Safety Officer at the MLW.

Proceedings

Participants were then taken through a series of presentations by facilitators from MLW, College of Medicine and the Blantyre Malaria project.

At 10 AM participants were treated to tea and snacks and they had group photos taken.

Presentations continued up to Lunch hour and then an afternoon session which continued up to 14:40 hrs.

Exercise

The participants were shown a video clip on Consenting study participants. After the clip finished participants were asked to point out lessons drawn from the video clip. Participants were able to mention things that were done right and those that were not in tandem with GCP.

Group Discussions

After the second tea break, there were group sessions where participants discussed way forward, what to stop and what to improve in terms of GCP compliance.

Closing

The closing remarks were given by Cody and Tamala. They both thanked participants for attending this workshop and for their active participation and contribution. Participants were then issued with certificates of attendance.

At 16:20 hrs the workshop was closed.
