Research Nurse workshop in Nigeria 2017
The workshop was attended by 49 clinical nurses from about 7 different hospitals: University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi (NAUTH), National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu (NOHE), University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC), Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) and Niger Foundation Hospital.
Mrs Ebere Okenwa served as the moderator of the event.
Ekezie Ralueke Oluchukwu highlighted the aims and objectives of the workshop, introduced attendees to Global Research Nurses (GRN) and The Global Health Network (TGHN). He outlined the commitments of the GRN, and TGHN towards developing nursing research, introduced the e-learning courses, the Professional membership scheme and also taught the nurses how to register on the GRN website to become a member. He ended the introduction with an encouragement to the nurses to commit more time in utilizing the resources available at the GRN website to equip them especially in relation to research.
The second speaker was Dr. Mrs Okoronkwo , Fellow West African College of Nursing (FWACN) and former HOD Nursing department University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC). Her focus was on “Overview of the research Process and Key issues in the introduction and literature Review”.
The third speaker was Dr Mrs Agnes Anarado (FWACN) and a former HOD Nursing Department University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC) on the topic “Key issues in Research Methodology, including Ethico-legal implications of Research with human subjects”.
The fourth speaker, Dr Mrs Nwonu (FWACN), former HOD Nursing Department University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC), focused on “Key issues in presentation of Results, Discussion of Findings, and Report writing”.
Mr Ekezie Ralueke followed with “Health Informatics, dissemination of research reports/publications”. During his talk participants had the opportunity to register on the GRN website.
Participants expressed their satisfaction with the workshop. However, they urged the organizers to plan a larger workshop or conference on nursing research as a platform for nurses to present their work and grow the Nurses Research Network in Nigeria. A Nurse Research Network does not exist and there have not been any nursing research conferences in Nigeria.
The conclusion for the workshop is that there are many nurses who are interested in nursing research. There are also those who are already conducting some research. However these nurses have limitations in publication and access to funds to carry out research and to publish.
