Date: 09 November 2023
Welwitchia Health Training Centre (WHTC) is a private tertiary institution which began BSc Nursing training program in September 2013. In this program the students in their third year, have a Research theory module which they should complete and pass. Then in fourth year they conduct a research project under supervision by lecturers. Supervisors are assigned to guide the students through the research project. However, over the past years research output in the form of publications from both students and lecturers have been minimal. The nursing profession among other professions requires research to increase the knowledge base for the nursing profession. Also tertiary institutions rankings improve as research output increases.
The WHTC Katima Mulilo Campus opened its doors to the first group of nursing students in September 2021. This year in September this group of BSc Nursing Science students will be in their third year where they will be introduced to Research. Then in fourth year they will carry out a research project under the supervision of the lecturers. As this will be the first time of being assigned students for research supervision, this workshop will empower the lecturers to take up this role. Not only are the lecturers expected to supervise students, they should also conduct research on their own or in teams with others. It is therefore expected that the lecturers will be motivated to engage in research and publish their results after attending the workshop.
It is anticipated that following this workshop there will be the following outputs:
- Improved quality of nursing/midwifery research by both staff and students. Quality research should have well defined topics and use the most appropriate research methods amongst other characteristics.
- At least three to five manuscripts should be ready for publication six months after the workshop.
- The attendees should also be able to train other members of staff who may not be able to attend or who join the campus later.
- Increased nursing research output, as the students will begin conducting research their fourth year it is anticipated that there will be an increase in research which may be published in peer reviewed journals.
- Improved ranking /recognition of our institution as a tertiary institution. Methodologies used to rank tertiary institutions use research output from institutions as one of the indicators they use for ranking institutions. It is therefore hoped that research findings from WHTC staff and students will be cited by other researchers/ authors.
The participants will be encouraged to identify collaborations within The Global Health Network. The participants will impart knowledge gained to colleagues and students and also be part of the institution’s research committee which is responsible for reviewing Research proposals and marking research theses from nursing and midwifery students. Participants will be expected participate in journal article reviews.
Workshop objectives:
By the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Describe research designs and the significance of research in Nursing and Midwifery.
- Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing software for referencing, plagiarism check, and data analysis.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication.
- Demonstrate the ability to critique research proposals and research theses effectively.
