Nursing and Midwifery-led Qualitative Research Capacity Strengthening Workshops at the University of Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia:

A Proposal for Hands-on Training to Produce Publishable Scientific Manuscripts

Programme led by: Amare Demsie Ayele, Nurse, Clinical worker, Academician, and Researcher, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Specialized Hospital, University of Gondar, Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia. Winner of The Global Research Nurses Pump Priming grants: workshop Awards June 2023.
Location: Olympia Hotel, Gondar city, Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia
Target Audience: Nurses and midwives.
Number of participants: 62.
Duration: Over six months, itially planned for the period from 1st June 2023 to 30th November 2023, was delayed to the period from 1st November 2023 to 30th April 2024.

Addressing a critical gap in qualitative research skills among nurses in Ethiopia, these workshops are designed to elevate participants' proficiency in the inception, design, and communication of qualitative research. The overarching objective is to generate publishable outcomes, comprising one policy brief and four scientific manuscripts, thereby bolstering capacity for advanced and policy-relevant qualitative research within the healthcare domain, particularly within nursing and midwifery.


  • Workshop Structure: Three workshops will be conducted, each spanning five days.
  • Delivery Mode: The workshops will employ a diverse range of instructional methods, including face-to-face training, facilitated lecturing, group work, fieldwork, and computer-based tasks.
  • Aim and objectives: The main aim of this project is to create a pool of qualitative research scientists in nursing and midwifery who could contribute for high-quality healthcare practice, research, policy making and science.
  • Objectives:
    • To qualify, strengthen and build qualitative research skills of nurses and midwives
    • To produce high-caliber qualitative research manuscripts that will be publishable in peer-reviewed journals
    • To enhance the improvement of clinical service standards and patient cares through addressing major obstacles identified by qualitative researches
    • To generate hypotheses that would be taken as the footsteps for quantitative and/or implementation researches
    • To increase the generation, synthesis and utilization of evidences in the healthcare decision making process
    • To increase the national and/or international reputability and ranking of our university or hospital in scientific contributions
  • Trainers: Dr. Eshetu Hailesellasie from the University of Gondar and Mr. Abebaw Yeshambel from Debre Tabor University, both renowned for their expertise in qualitative research and communication, will lead the workshops.
  • Anticipated Outputs: The anticipated outputs include the production of four high-quality qualitative research manuscripts and one policy brief. 
  • Sustainability Plan: To ensure sustainability, a performance monitoring system will be established, further research collaborations will be fostered, and impactful long-term projects will be developed. 

In summary, these workshops aspire to equip nurses and midwives with the requisite skills to conduct qualitative research effectively. By doing so, participants will be empowered to contribute meaningfully to healthcare practices, policy-making endeavours, and scientific progress, while also fostering enduring research collaborations and facilitating knowledge dissemination.
