I am bothered by the level of medicalisation in childbirth in most health facilities in my country. To change this requires alot of political will within maternity units. However when i tried to raise this issue in one of the meetings, it was met with "safety" debate. Is there someone who could suggest ways of changing this trend?

That's meant to say 'suggested' looking at this research.

    I hope it helps

    Hi Eunice
My colleagues in Oxford have surged looking at this research: Can we suggest that the NPEU Birthplace study provides good research evidence for place of birth in relation to maternal choice, safety and outcome.

The Birthplace national cohort study was designed to answer questions about the risks and benefits of giving birth in different settings, focusing in particular on birth outcomes in healthy women with straightforward pregnancies who are at ‘low risk’ of complications.

This depends in which country you are. Where are you? In the UK I think it is patient groups (like the Natural Childbirth Trust) which have lobbied the national health service and politicians to change this.

  • Hi Eunice,

Thank you for voicing your concerns. We will share it with the broader global health network to see if anyone can offer insightful commentary on the topic.

    Best wishes,
